3PEAK TPT1256 CAN FD Transceiver: 5 Mbps Communication, VIO Level Shifting, and ±42 V Bus-Fault Protection
Industrial automation, energy storage, and distributed control equipment must communicate across different host-voltage domains and wiring conditions. A CAN interface therefore needs more than sufficient data rate: logic compatibility, fault handling, and board-level integration must be addressed together.
The 3PEAK TPT1256 is a high-speed transceiver supporting CAN FD communication up to 5 Mbps. Integrated VIO level shifting, ±42 V bus-fault protection, and a ±30 V common-mode input range combine with internal protection functions and silent mode. SOP8 and DFN3×3-8 package options provide flexibility for industrial CAN-node development.

VIO Level Shifting Simplifies Host Connections
A separate VIO supply allows the logic interface to match a compatible host, including appropriate 3.3 V and 5 V designs. This can remove the need for an additional logic-level translator, reducing component count and interface routing.
Host logic and the transceiver supply can be planned independently within their specified operating conditions. This makes it easier to retain an existing MCU platform while adding or upgrading its CAN connection.
Up to 5 Mbps CAN FD for Data Exchange
The TPT1256 supports CAN FD data rates up to 5 Mbps and meets the ISO 11898-2:2016 physical-layer standard. It connects the controller's logic signals to the CAN bus, providing a physical interface for equipment status, sensor data, and control messages.
The transceiver, CAN FD controller, cable, termination, and network topology should be evaluated together. Select timing settings for the intended network, then verify waveforms and communication errors under the actual loading and wiring conditions.
Separate Fault Tolerance from Common-Mode Operation
±42 V bus-fault protection provides tolerance to specified abnormal voltages at the bus interface. It applies to the bus pins and does not increase the permitted VCC supply voltage.
The ±30 V common-mode input range addresses a different requirement: receiving differential signals when nodes experience ground-potential differences. Evaluate common-mode operation and fault exposure separately, rather than treating the fault rating as a normal communication range.
Built-In Protection for Abnormal Conditions
Bus-pin protection up to ±15 kV under IEC 61000-4-2 test conditions is complemented by thermal shutdown and undervoltage protection. These features support interface protection planning; additional components should be selected around the final connector, grounding, and equipment requirements.
TXD dominant timeout helps limit the effect of a host signal remaining dominant for an excessive period. Combined with firmware diagnostics and fault handling, it can reduce the risk of one faulty node holding the bus.
Silent Mode Keeps Reception Available
Silent mode disables transmission while keeping reception available. A controller can observe bus traffic without the transceiver actively transmitting.
This mode can be incorporated into startup, diagnostics, and fault-response workflows. It manages communication behavior and should not be treated as a low-power sleep mode.
Package Flexibility for Industrial Applications
SOP8 and DFN3×3-8 packages, together with -40°C to +125°C operation, support different board-space and assembly requirements. Applications include industrial automation, sensors and drives, energy-storage equipment, telecom base stations, and building and security controls.
By bringing logic-level matching, CAN FD signaling, and protection into one interface device, the 3PEAK TPT1256 provides a practical foundation for CAN-node integration. Complete-product validation should connect these features with the actual power, wiring, timing, and fault-response requirements.
