TDK PositionSense Two-Chip Nine-Axis Solution: Low-Power IMU, TMR Sensing, and Integrated Fusion for Physical AI
Smart glasses, wearables, and robots need more than motion detection. They also need reliable information about orientation and heading. For devices that sense continuously, calibration, power consumption, and integration must be considered together.
TDK InvenSense PositionSense™ combines a six-axis SmartMotion® IMU and three-axis TMR magnetometer with on-chip fusion and calibration software. TDK announced worldwide availability on October 13, 2026, addressing orientation tracking and navigation applications across wearables, mobile devices, robotics, and drones.
Nine-Axis Sensing with Vibration-Resistant Motion Tracking
The architecture combines three acceleration axes, three gyroscope axes, and three magnetic axes. Together, these measurements provide the inputs for absolute heading and orientation tracking.
The SmartMotion IMU includes a low-noise accelerometer and BalancedGyro vibration-resistant gyroscope technology. The TMR magnetometer adds sensitive, low-noise magnetic measurement with low-power operation and resistance to magnetic-field shocks.
On-Chip Fusion and Calibration
On-chip sensor fusion and precise time synchronization coordinate the sensor measurements. Gyro-assisted calibration, gyro/magnetometer cross-calibration, and automatic recovery after magnetic shocks bring tracking and calibration functions into the same solution.
Four Configurations for Different Motion and Interface Requirements
| Configuration | Accel Full Scale | Gyro Full Scale | VDDIO | Supported Interfaces |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ICM-45608 + ICT-15318 | 16 g | 2000 dps | 1.8 V | I²C, SPI, I3C |
| ICM-45608 + ICT-15312 | 16 g | 2000 dps | 1.2 V | I²C, SPI |
| ICM-45689 + ICT-15318 | ±32 g | ±4000 dps | 1.8 V | I²C, SPI, I3C |
| ICM-45689 + ICT-15312 | ±32 g | ±4000 dps | 1.2 V | I²C, SPI |
ICM-45608 configurations address IoT and power-sensitive products. ICM-45689 configurations provide additional measurement headroom for high-dynamic motion. The listed VDDIO values describe I/O voltage conditions; power and interface connections should follow the selected configuration.
Always-On Sensing for Wearable and Mobile Products
All four configurations combine low-power sensing with integrated software for always-on applications. This allows developers to evaluate continuous orientation tracking alongside their battery and system-integration requirements.
Supporting the Next Generation of Physical AI Devices
Target applications include smart glasses, AR/VR, wearables, TWS earbuds, smartphones, smart canes, drones, and robots. PositionSense supplies a sensing foundation for motion tracking, heading detection, and navigation development.
By combining hardware, fusion, and calibration, PositionSense gives development teams a common platform for evaluating motion range, interface compatibility, and application behavior.
